Catalytic Converter Removal

Removal - It took me an entire afternoon to cut the cat off with a hack saw and install the new pipe. The downpipe and Cat must first be removed by unscrewing the two oxygen Sensors, the clam clamp and the three bolts at the turbo housing. I then used a hack saw to cut the Cat off just inside each of the welds. I sanded both ends and slid the pipe with exhaust sealer over each end. I secured it with the two circle clamps and drilled a hole in the pipe to hold the second oxygen sensor. There was noticably quicker spool up with out the cat.

Cost: 15$ Pipe, 2 Circle Clamps, Exhaust Sealer
Time: 4 hr
Difficulty: Moderate

Disclaimer - I do not want to recommend this modification since it is illegal, however I do think that it is a better way to go than gutting the Cat. There was a noticable increase in the sound level during idle which I liked, but during acceleration it becomes extremely loud. After three months I was tired of the sound and reinstalled the Cat. I have decided that the best solution is to install a 3 inch downpipe with a 3 inch high flow catalytic converter.

* Do not perform this modification if you have a naturally aspirated Saab. The decrease in backpressure will cause a decrease in performance and gas mileage.
