Crank Case Breather

When I upgraded my pre-turbo intake piping I removed my crank case breather connection to the pre-turbo pipe. The original system is designed for emission reasons to vent the crank case oil fumes to the intake so they can be burnt. But the oil vapor will collect on the intake piping and on the intercooler this will reduce the heat transfer rate. The oil vapor can also have the effect of lowering the octane rating of the fuel if enough is sucked into the engine. So venting the crankcase is not great for performance, but it is still necessary that it is vented somewhere.

My first fix was to simply add a small breather filter to the end of the crank case vent. It fit very well and worked fine. But after a few months the filter began collecting oil and then dripping and spraying it around my engine bay. It eventually ruined my cabin air filter and made a mess.

Finally I bought an oil catch can kit from ebay for $30. Install was very easy. I drilled one hole on the drain channel below the cabin inlet vents and mounted the catch can directly below it. I plumbed the lines and attached the filter, took a total of 20 minutes. Results are very good after several months of use. There is a small level indicator on the catch can that shows a small amount of oil has been collected. The filter breather is no longer spraying oil around my engine bay.
