Redline Shift-Up Light

If you are like me you are tired of the yellow shift-up light telling you when to shift. The simplest way to get rid of it is to cut the wire. But I wanted to turn the light into something more useful, a redline shift-up light. With this setup the light comes on 6000 rpm, just before the 6200 rpm redline. I can keep my eyes focused on the road during full runs.

The rpm switch was purchased from SummitRacing.com for $45 (which was the cheapest one I could find) and is pictured to the right with the cover removed. It has two sets of switches for setting the rpm, one for every 1000 rpm and one for every 200 rpm. It also has a gain adjuster to dial in the rpm signal. It turns out that the Saab rpm signal is much lower than the standard. I had to set the switch to 2200 rpm for the light to correctly come on at 6000 rpm.

The rpm switch comes with two types of relays. One that is always grounded and turns on and the other is always off and becomes grounded at the desired rpms. This second relay is used for the shift up light. The wire for the light is +12 volts and turns on when the wire is grounded.

Shift Light: +12 volts, Pin # 55 -- Blue/Yellow Wire
RPM Signal: 1-3 volts, Pin # 58 -- Green/Red Wire

* Be aware that wiring may be different on other model Saabs.
