Steering Rack Bushing Spacer

You have probably seen the steering rack brace and clamp available for the passenger side of the steering rack. This modification is to stiffen the other bushing that holds the steering rack to the firewall. The rubber bushing on the driver’s side does not suffer from the same flaws as the passenger side bushing and clamp. The rubber bushing on the driver’s side sits in a channel to minimize side-to-side flex. However it does not completely eliminate it. When watching the steering rack and turning the steering wheel back and forth the rack slides a few millimeters in both directions. This modification adds a spacer to the bushing, applying more pressure to the rubber bushing and minimizing side-to-side flex.

Instructions:
This modification is very easy to perform. Start by removing the large fuse/relay box. It is held in place by one screw and 3 clips. The wire to the hood switch must also be unclipped. This will give enough room to remove the 13mm bolt and screw that holds on the C-clamp. Once it is off add the spacer and reinstall. For my spacer I used some silicone hose that I had laying around. The inner diameter was 10mm and the wall thickness was 4mm. This size fit perfectly and the silicone is a good choice because it will bend but not compress too much.
